Posy rings contained messages of devotion. They were often (but not always) worn as wedding rings, but always acted as a reminder and promise to adhere to the phrase engraved within. In the 16th and 17th centuries, the loving words were thought to literally penetrate the skin through touch, and nobody but the wearer knew what they expressed.
