The legendary jewelry historian Diana Scarsbrick wrote a book on this type of ring in 2021; it's called "I like my Choyce". She focuses on maybe the most personal of all rings: those associated with love and marriage. The majority of the gold bands are inscribed with English mottos expressing admiration, affection, and pledges of fidelity. Known as posies, these rings were popular from the late Middle Ages until the middle of the nineteenth century, and they help reveal the social etiquette and customs of their time. Our ring says "I do rejoice" because the wearer "likes their choice" of mate. It would have been an obvious rhyme back then, and meant that they were thrilled to be marrying for love.
