In Italy, 13 is considered a very lucky number. The expression fare tredici (“to do 13”) means hit the jackpot. In France, where this piece was almost certainly made, 13 was once considered a lucky number and was used as a numerical good luck charm in the form of charms, brooches and pins. This pendant (formerly a brooch) was painstakingly handmade (can you see the tiny saw marks???) in the early 20th century, the lucky number sits within a granulated frame over a ground of diamond-studded flowers.
