At one point, the town of Torre del Greco alone employed 4,000 people in 82 coral-carving workshops. This early Victorian bracelet set features multiple strands of tiny coral beads and distinctive carved “pineapple” clasps, a technique associated with Neapolitan coral work.

For centuries, pineapples were status symbols in Europe. In the 17th and 18th centuries, a single imported fruit could cost a fortune, and wealthy hosts sometimes rented them to display at dinner parties. Growing pineapples in England required elaborate heated greenhouses called pineries, which were enormously expensive to build and maintain. The fruit became so closely associated with wealth and prestige that Charles II commissioned a portrait of himself receiving one. (Can you see how the cross-hatching on these spherical clasps resemble a pineapple's skin?)

MATERIALS: 10k gold (tests), coral, red cord

AGE: c. 1840

CONDITION: Very good

SIZE: 7" length
