Guilloché enamel is a cool effect: metal is mechanically engraved in an extremely precise design, traditionally using an engine-turning lathe. Translucent enamel is then laid over the engraving, so the surface remains visible underneath and shimmers as it catches the light. The effect is rippling, like a textile or the surface of water. It was technically demanding work, and around 1900 it was especially fashionable for fine jewelry and small luxury objects. Here, the condition is pristine, the powder-blue color is sophisticated, and the high gold content makes it particularly fine.
