This spectacular gold necklace, made during the 1860s, blends two obsessions of the Victorian era: sentimental floral motifs and newly unearthed ancient goldsmithing techniques. The abstracted flower forms are purely Victorian, but the granulation and coiled wirework were lifted straight from Etruscan jewelry excavated in the mid-19th century. This fringed jewel reflects their drive to recreate—or outshine—the mysteries of ancient craftsmanship.
