Carnelian is one of the workhorses of 19th century jewelry. It's not particularly rare, so isn't considered a "precious" stone. Carnelian crystals can grow quite large and can be carved into all manner of shapes. The fiery orange stone is used to great effect here to form the frame of this Georgian locket. Fun fact/folklore: Apparently, carnelian enhances fertility. The name is derived from the Latin word caro, carnis ("flesh"), so that tracks.
