The term "poissarde" is a historical term for Parisian fishwives and market women who were politically active during the French Revolution. On one hand, it's a way to refer to women with a coarse manner. On the other, the poissardes were a significant political force, traveling to Versailles twice a year to meet with the king and appearing at special occasions. In 1789, they led the Women's March on Versailles to protest the price and scarcity of bread. This event was a seminal moment in the French Revolution. They may -or may not- have worn earrings like these.
