A manticore is a legendary hybrid monster from Persian mythology. It is traditionally depicted with the body of a lion, the face of a human, and a scorpion-like stinger for a tail. Because it prefers human flesh and is known to consume its prey whole—leaving no bones behind—the creature acts as a terrifying representation of unstoppable, predatory hunger. He (she?) is carved in amethyst and was used to seal hot wax on envelopes.
