THIS YOUNG MAN'S clothing conveys that he's a midshipman in the royal navy. He was probably around twelve years old and from a wealthy or aristocratic family, which was standard for the period (around 1790). He would have slept in a hammock in the gunroom while training to become a commissioned officer, and his family must have been quite proud of him. To keep his memory close while he was far away at sea, they commissioned this ring with his portrait painted in miniature. I hope he made it home ok.
