A skull and old bones are strewn about in a stark enameled still life. This jewel was made around 1800 as a Memento Mori. To constantly dwell on the impermanence of life is humbling; back then, wealthy English men (and a few women) visited classical Greek and Roman ruins to evoke the same feeling. The majestic temples of Ancient Rome are crumbling to dust; our warm bodies eventually do too. This pendant was converted from a brooch to a pendant at some point in the last two centuries.
