The pearl locket was created around the year 1800 in typical Regency style with natural split pearls and a rock crystal lens. A hundred or so years later, this family heirloom was modified by a Victorian/Edwardian jeweler: the word "Mother" was carved, in reverse, into the rock crystal. We suspect the handwriting was done by Mother herself.
