9 faux coins are mounted on a Georgian-looking pinchbeck chain measuring 9" long in total, with a late 19th/early 20th c. clasp. Was this to be worn like a decorative watch chain? The coins have on the front George's head and "GEORGIVS III DEL GRATIA" and on the back, his crest (a spade-shaped shield) crowned, and the words "IN MEMORY OF THE GOOD OLD DAYS 1788". The coins are 3/4" dia. and were known as "Spade Guineas". They were produced as gaming counters and novelty pocket pieces during the 19th century to commemorate a bygone era of wealth, high-stakes gambling, and nostalgia. Genuine gold guineas were largely replaced by the gold sovereign in 1817, turning the Spade Guinea into a symbol of a fabled, "better" past. Want me to turn these into a 7" (or any length you desire) bracelet? I can do that for you.
