"Gold back and front", which means the visible outer surfaces are real gold sheet, but the piece isn't solid gold. A layer of gold was mechanically bonded to a base metal core (often brass). The FRONT AND BACK panels are gold. The inner frame, hinge, rims, clasp, and internal fittings are base metal. It's higher-quality construction than "gold plate" because the gold layer is relatively thick. Hand-engraved swirls and florals on back, and on the front a horseshoe engraved with lucky seven nails. Inside the crescent, an ivy pattern (ivy = "I cling to thee"). No interior frames or lenses, c. 1890.
