The Gorham silver company was founded in Providence in 1831 and quickly established a reputation for excellence manufacturing spoons, thimbles, combs and jewelry. Mary Todd Lincoln bought a Gorham tea and flatware service for the White House in 1859.They made this ring en masse as a souvenir of the 1893 Chicago World's Fair (also known as The World's Columbian Exposition). The fair's theme? The 400th anniversary of Columbus' landing. There's a lot going on here; inside, there's a riot of hallmarks. Outside, it's marked "Recuerdo de la Exposicion de Chicago" with the dates 1492-1893 and the initials of Fernando and Ysabel, the Catholic Monarchs who sent Columbus on his way; The ring is named "El Anillo Ysabel" or "The Ysabel Ring." size 6, not resizable. 1/4" wide.
