These cluster earrings are a fine example of late 18th-century Iberian jewelry, made in silver and set with richly hued topaz. The faceted stones are arranged in tight concentric rosettes—an arrangement typical of Portuguese and Spanish work from this era, when regional artisans developed their own distinctive style apart from the rest of Europe.

In the Iberian Peninsula, topaz was prized not only for its brilliance but also for its symbolic power. The golden stone was thought to bestow strength, dispel enchantments, and attract favor from both earthly and divine forces. Wealthy patrons and aristocrats favored topaz over diamonds for its warmth and depth, and Portuguese mines (and later Brazilian ones) provided an abundant local source.
