Was associated with refinement and intellect. Introduced in the 16th c after Columbus brought tobacco from the Americas. Was considered less crude (no smoke or ash) than pipes or chewing tobacco. Sometimes it was flavored or perfumed with lavender, rose, menthol, bergamot or clove.
