The symbol of clasped hands are ancient. This ring dates from around the year 400 (!!) and with the addition of the Latin words, which translate to something like "For Your Choice", we can infer it was a friendship or loyalty piece. After all, if you offer someone your hand to grasp, you're showing that there's no weapon there. The handshake as a friendly greeting has persisted.
