John James Durrant established his business in the mid 1800s at 30 Cheapside in London. This silver and amethyst paste brooch dates to the early years of his solo endeavor as a watchmaker, jeweler and silversmith - the reverse side is emblazoned with his name, trade and location and predates the makers mark stamped on later pieces produced in his workshop. In 1897, he partnered with his son and the business became known as "John James Durrant & Son" and after his death in 1905, the name changed once again to simply "Durrant & Son." A delightfully specific piece of London jewelry history.
