Over the past several millennia, the snake has been used to represent many things: both good and evil, fertility, passion, and rebirth. The Victorians employed the image of the snake as a symbol of everlasting love. Prince Albert gave Queen Victoria a serpent ring for their engagement, sparking a snake jewelry craze that would last the entirety of her 60-year reign and into the modern day. This c. 1860 serpent ring is fashioned in 15k rose gold and set with a deep red pear-shaped garnet and cabochon garnet eyes.
