MOTHER LODE! During the Canadian and American gold rushes of the 19th century, jewelers in mining towns would set gold nuggets into rings for prospectors who struck it rich. I can only imagine the conditions under which this piece was created - the set of Deadwood comes to mind. A partially machine-made base was customized with fancy (but pretty primitive) engraving. A square-shaped hunk of gold is the main event.
