Augustus Frederick, Duke of Sussex and favorite uncle of Queen Victoria, was Grand Master of the United Grand Lodge of England, the governing body of Freemasonry in both England and Wales. This medal, an award for service, was presented only a few years after his death in 1843. The front of the medallion features a seated woman with her arms around a young boy and girl beneath the symbol of the all seeing eye. The obverse reads: "Honorable Testimonial of Masonic Charity & Benevolence Instituted by H:R:H: Aug[ustus] Fed[erick] Duke of Sussex M: W: Grand Master". The medal is fitted in gold and engraved along the outer edge, "Brother Pierre Moret Served as Steward to the Girls Charity 1847, to the Boys Charity 1848". The Royal Masonic Trust for Girls and Boys still exists to this day with the purported aims of relieving poverty and advancing education for children and young people. Originally, this piece would have been suspended from a ribbon and ceremonially pinned to a lapel.
