In the Middle Ages, pigs were a sign of wealth and prosperity because they were easy to feed and reproduced quickly. Fast forward to modern Germany, where "Schwein gehabt" ("got a pig") is a figure of speech that means "to be lucky". England thought they brought good fortune, too - that's where this gold cutie was made around 1880 as a good luck talisman.
