The shape or style of this mounting evolved in the Gothic period and is known as a “stirrup.” Intended to evoke the shape of the equestrian equipment of the same name, the 13th-century versions are quite rare and almost always feature a cabochon gemstone in a rub-over setting. This Victorian-era take on the stirrup ring combines the traditional medieval shape with the bright sparkle of a .17ct old European cut diamond.
