Princess Mary, Duchess of Gloucester and Edinburgh, was the eleventh child of King George III and Queen Charlotte. She was born on April 25, 1776 and at age 40 she married her first cousin, Prince William Frederick. Hey, it was a different time! Anyway, she was close friends with Queen Victoria, her niece, who was on the throne when Mary died in 1857. At that point, locks of her hair were cut and placed into lockets like this one to honor her memory.
