In the 18th century, a prolific inventor named Joseph Bramah created a cylindrical key with precise notches along the surface. These “Bramah Locks” are now regarded as the first high-security locking systems. By the Victorian era, they were custom-made into jewels, including rings (which hid the key, folded, inside) and this pendant. It was meant to open a jewelry box. What safer place to hide a key than on your body, disguised as a jewel? The box it protected is long lost.
